| Summary, etc. | À la fin du xviiie siècle, Rome hébergeait un vaste réseau de collèges, hospices et lieux d’accueil pour les catholiques orientaux provenant de l’Empire ottoman et de ses environs. La supervision de ces institutions pontificales était confiée à la Congrégation de Propaganda fide, responsable des missions catholiques dans le monde. L’article reconstruit comment l’arrivée des Français dans la Ville Éternelle a influencé l’existence des religieux orientaux et déterminé le sort de leurs établissements. À leur regard et encore plus dans la gestion de la structure bureaucratique de la Propagande, l’administration napoléonienne s’est trouvée alors divisée entre des besoins pratiques et économiques immédiats, à satisfaire par l’application rigoureuse des normes sur la confiscation des biens ecclésiastiques, et des ambitions politiques et diplomatiques à long terme, visant à utiliser le réseau missionnaire catholique en Orient comme un instrument de propagande impériale. |

Eastern Christians in the Eternal City and the Congregation of Propaganda Fide during the Napoleonic occupation (1808-1814)At the end of the eighteenth century, Rome was home to an extensive network of colleges, hospices, and places of welcome for Eastern Christians from the Ottoman Empire and its surroundings. The supervision of these pontifical institutions was entrusted to the Congregation of Propaganda Fide, responsible for Catholic missions in the world. This article explores how the arrival of the French in the Eternal City influenced the existence of clerics from the East, and determined the fate of their establishments. In the management of the bureaucratic structure of Propaganda, the Napoleonic administration found itself torn between immediate practical and economic needs, to be satisfied by the rigorous application of the norms on the confiscation of ecclesiastical goods, and long-term political and diplomatic ambitions, aimed at using the Catholic missionary network in the East as an instrument of imperial propaganda. |
