Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The current instrumental conception of rationality even in the revised versions proposed by important theorists as H. Simon or G. Becker leads to the view that people choose rationally the means they use to reach their goals, while their goals, values or beliefs would be imposed to them by social, cultural, biological or psychological forces they have little control of and even are unaware of. Should we consider the objectives, preferences, values, normative and positive beliefs of actors as facts to be observed and left unexplained or explained by conjectural forces? A way to get rid of the difficulties aroused by the various instrumental versions of the theory of rationality is to substitute for it the Theory of Ordinary Rationality ( tor). The paper proposes a formal definition of this notion, shows that it can be applied to representations and values, presents a sample of applications and sketches a survey of its logical advantages over the theories of rationality currently in use, as notably the so-called Rational Choice Theory ( rct). |
