Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The long-delayed publication of the whole set of papers in the Schumpeter-Parsons seminar on rationality (1939-1940) gives us the opportunity to (re)discover through the debates that took place the respective positions of several major figures in the social sciences and to reevaluate their contribution. Schumpeter delivered a “sketch” on conceptual clarification and emphasized the imperative of distinguishing real cause from epistemic rationality. Parsons’s paper was mainly in line with the framework of The Structure of Social Action, at a time when Parsons had begun to distance himself from the economic conception of rationality. The lecture given by Schütz brought some dissonance into the seminar with the idea of a gap between the level of everyday life and that of scientific rationality. A brief outline of recent developments was therefore required: it led us to consider that we are currently witnessing more efforts aimed at redefining rationality than towards lessening its importance. |
