| Summary, etc. | Cet article porte sur un groupe d’artistes méconnus des sciences sociales, les « clowns à l’hôpital ». Il montre que leur socialisation se caractérise par la création d’une identité spécifique et individuelle de clown qui est ensuite plus ou moins mise à l’épreuve dans le travail à l’hôpital. En effet, la création de son clown est une condition incontournable pour devenir membre du groupe. Elle donne lieu à une grande diversité de personnages qui ne sont pas interchangeables et que l’on peut ensuite « amener » avec soi n’importe où, y compris à l’hôpital. En quoi consiste concrètement le travail de construction de son identité personnelle de clown ? Comment le groupe professionnel régule-t‑il cette diversité ? Et une fois entrés à l’hôpital, dans quelle mesure les clowns parviennent-ils à préserver leur identité d’artiste ? À partir d’une ethnographie menée en France avec l’association Le Rire Médecin, l’article analyse comment les clowns à l’hôpital construisent une identité professionnelle « pas comme les autres », dans un processus à la croisée du monde des arts et de celui des soins. Celle-ci s’appuie sur des acquis de leur socialisation professionnelle et sur des pratiques de régulation individuelles et collectives de leur identité d’artiste. |

| Summary, etc. | This article focuses on a group of artists little known to the social sciences: “hospital clowns”. It shows that their socialization is characterized by the creation of a specific, individual identity as a clown, which is then put to the test in their hospital work. Indeed, creating one’s own clown is a prerequisite for becoming a member of the group. It leads to a wide variety of characters that are not interchangeable (you can’t play someone else’s clown) and that you can then “bring” with you anywhere, including the hospital. What does the work of building up a personal clown identity actually involve? How does the professional group regulate this diversity? And once in hospital, to what extent do clowns manage to preserve their identity as artists? Based on an ethnography conducted with a French NGO called Le Rire Médecin, this paper shows how hospital clowns build a professional identity that is “not like any other”, in a process at the crossroads of the world of arts and the world of medical care. This identity is based on their professional socialization and on individual and collective practices for regulating their identity as artists. |
