| Summary, etc. | La présente contribution part du constat que, dans la sociologie de l’art, domaine qui s’est pourtant considérablement développé depuis une vingtaine d’années, la sociologie visuelle au sens d’analyse des images reste encore très peu développée. Pourtant, cela n’est nullement dû à une impossibilité de procéder à une sociologie des œuvres visuelles. Afin d’étayer cette position, l’article vise, à partir d’un exemple particulier, à illustrer comment la sociologie de l’art peut analyser des œuvres visuelles. C’est la production de l’École de photographie d’Helsinki, présentée dans un ouvrage de synthèse, qui est ici retenue. Sont tout d’abord exposées les conditions d’émergence de la recherche, puis sont livrées quelques caractéristiques des artistes appartenant au mouvement considéré. L’objectivation sociologique appliquée aux images à travers notamment l’analyse de leur thématique et d’autres caractéristiques est alors mobilisée. Il s’agit de faire ressortir en quoi cette école de photographie qui se confond avec un pays ou, plus précisément encore, avec une ville, s’accompagne de certains traits culturels communs aux différents artistes et que nous pouvons relever à travers leurs œuvres, ici des photographies. |

| Summary, etc. | Just Cultural Clichés ? A Sociological Analysis of the Works of theHelsinki School of PhotographyAlthough the sociology of art has developed considerably in the last twenty years, visual sociology – intended here as the analysis of art images – remains underdeveloped. This dearth of visual studies in the sociology of art does not, however, imply that it is not possible to apply a sociological analysis to artistic works in the visual domain. In order to illustrate this point, this article presents a sociological study of the works of the Helsinki School of Photography. The context of this research is presented first, followed by a description of some of the salient characteristics of those artists who belong to the Helsinki School of Photography. Then, sociological objectivizing is mobilized through the process of analyzing the themes and other characteristics of the works. This case study demonstrates that certain themes and stylistic characteristics of works of art, in this case photography, can be identified in terms of artists’ relationship to a specific country or even more precisely here to a city. Thus, common cultural traits shared by artists are expressed through their work. |
