| Summary, etc. | Les récits retraçant les sièges sont à la fois nombreux mais également peu étudiés, notamment pour les guerres révolutionnaires. L’étude d’un corpus de ces journaux rédigés par des militaires – dont il est nécessaire de retracer les itinéraires – informe sur la permanence en révolution d’un usage ancien visant à renseigner les pratiques obsidionales. Ce vecteur privilégié de l’information en temps de guerre se charge néanmoins d’autres fonctions pouvant remettre en cause la sincérité de leur rédaction : déférence envers la hiérarchie, écrits justificatifs voire écriture a posteriori. De plus, il s’insère parmi le flot des dossiers en transit entre les différents fronts et les instances du pouvoir. En effet, entre comptes-rendus factuels et récits aux accents autobiographiques, ces textes peuvent être l’occasion de défendre sa vie et son honneur face aux accusations qui peuvent conduire à l’échafaud. L’objectif est bien d’interroger un corpus propre à déterminer l’existence d’un potentiel genre des récits de siège. |

| Summary, etc. | Descriptions of military sieges are numerous, though little studied, particularly for the period of the revolutionary wars. A study of a corpus of accounts written by soldiers - whose itineraries must be retraced – demonstrates the permanence of this ancient practice within the Revolution, and illuminates the practice itself. Such reports, however rich in information, are not always neutral. Certain considerations--deferential attitudes of the author towards military hierarchy ; written justifications ; even writings after the fact---could compromise the accuracy of these accounts. Moreover, such writings entered the flood of files in transit between the different military fronts and the authorities. Indeed, the factual reports, together with narratives containing autobiographical overtones, often afforded opportunities for self-justification, and for the preservation of one’s honor faced with potentially deadly accusations. The author’s aim in this article is to examine a corpus of writings likely to prove the existence of a possible genre of siege narratives. |
