| Summary, etc. | Dans les premières décennies du xixe siècle, le travail des enfants pose crûment la question des conséquences sociales de l’industrialisation. Une mobilisation humanitaire sans précédent aboutit au vote de plusieurs lois protectrices, d’application inégale et difficile. Si le travail des enfants n’est alors pas une nouveauté, on peut néanmoins se demander dans quelle mesure la « révolution industrielle » en a modifié les caractéristiques. Le regain d’intérêt porté au phénomène par les historiens ne va pas sans divergences quant aux évaluations et à leur interprétation. Cet essai de synthèse vise à présenter au lecteur français les différents débats qui ont animé et animent encore l’historiographie. |

| Summary, etc. | In the first decades of the nineteenth century, child labor raised the question of the social consequences of industrialization. Unprecedented humanitarian action led to the passing of a number of protective laws, though their application was uneven and difficult. While child labor was nothing new at the time, one may well wonder to what extent the « industrial revolution » altered its characteristics. Historians' renewed interest in the phenomenon is not without divergent assessments and interpretations. This essay aims to introduce French readers to the various debates that have animated and continue to animate the historiography. |
