Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Does the Universe Progress ?This paper analyzes the different models of progress that Leibniz discusses in two Latin texts written between 1694-1696. It argues that these models imply two different conceptions of perfection in the case of an evolution of creatures and a world without progress, and in the case of universal improvement. Although the best possible world thesis is held to be valid in both cases, the principle of the best seems to favor the idea of the perpetual progress of the world and makes it possible, if not to determine the particular form such progress must take, then at least to rule out certain forms of evolution. |
