| Summary, etc. | La pensée contre-révolutionnaire a exercé une véritable « contrainte » sur la philosophie de l’histoire du xixe siècle. Elle a confronté les idéaux libéraux et démocratiques à leurs impensés en soulignant la nécessité de comprendre la société comme une réalité ayant sa consistance et ses structures propres. Mais, en formulant ainsi le programme d’une sociologie, elle s’est trouvée elle-même confrontée à l’obligation « dialectique » de penser le sens de l’événement révolutionnaire dans le tout de l’histoire : la déploration de la rupture de la trame du temps devait paradoxalement déboucher, soit dans l’espoir « progressiste » d’une refondation scientifique de la monarchie, soit dans l’attente messianique d’un nouveau régime du temps. |

It has forced liberal and democratic ideals to face up to their blind spots while stressing the need to understand society as a self-powered set of structures. Its sociological approach, however, was condemned to face up to the need for a dialectical interpretation of the meaning of the French Revolution in global history. The grievance against the tear of the web of time could not but overturn itself in a progressivist hope for a new enlightened monarchy, or in a messianic expectation of a new regime of time. |
