| Summary, etc. | Il est possible de lire les désirs et les ambitions d’une époque à partir des utopies qu’elle produit. Ce constat est particulièrement vrai pour la Renaissance et l’âge classique en Europe : l’utopie apparaît comme une alternative politique, face à un monde en proie à l’inquiétude et à la division. Pour ce qui est du XVIIe siècle anglais, l’utopie nous donne accès à une intelligibilité historique nouvelle, car elle nous révèle la manière dont une certaine figure de la modernité s’invente à travers ses utopies, et même s’affirme comme utopie. Si l’utopie est, chez Bacon, Hobbes et Wilkins, le signe de l’inventivité propre du discours philosophique, elle apparaît aussi, plus que jamais, comme un discours que la société tient sur elle-même. |

| Summary, etc. | It is possible to read the desires and ambitions of an era from the utopias it produces. This observation is particularly true for the Renaissance and early-modern Europe: utopia appears as a political alternative, in a world preoccupied with anxiety and division. But as far as the English seventeenth century is concerned, utopia gives us access to a new historical intelligibility, because it reveals the way in which a certain figure of modernity is invented through its utopias, and even asserts itself as a utopia. While Bacon, Hobbes, and Wilkins represent utopia as the sign of the inventiveness proper to philosophical discourse, it also appears, more than ever, as a discourse that society itself draws upon. |
