À partir de ce point d’accord, des propositions s’affrontent sur la question de savoir à partir de quand une discrimination attestée peut à bon droit être décrite comme raciale. Plusieurs modèles sont présentés dans l’article. Il s’agit de montrer d’une part que la désignation de l’altérité porte en premier lieu sur des groupes qui ne sont guère marqués par des différences visibles, et d’autre part que les politiques raciales ont pour finalité de freiner les processus de réduction de l’altérité. |

| Summary, etc. | Time and RaceHistorical research on the constitution of racial categorization as a political resource relies upon the paradigm of social constructivism. From this general agreement, different approaches clash when trying to decide at what point an act of discrimination can rightly be described as being racial. Several models are presented in the article. The main aim of the argument is to show, firstly, that the designation of otherness primarily concerns groups that are scarcely distinguishable in terms of visible differences, and, secondly, that racial policies are intended to slow down processes of reduction of otherness. |
