| Summary, etc. | Contrairement aux grandes figures du pragmatisme classique (Peirce, James, Dewey, Mead), Richard Rorty a souvent été accusé de prôner une pensée irrationaliste, hostile aux sciences. Dans cet article, je me propose de nuancer un tel verdict en présentant les enjeux, inséparablement philosophiques et métaphilosophiques, du débat que Rorty a instauré avec les principales branches de la philosophie des sciences contemporaine, autour des questions de l’essentialisme (la science comme « genre naturel »), du réalisme et de l’instrumentalisme scientifiques. Je propose en outre d’évaluer la manière dont Rorty a redécrit l’activité scientifique comme visant à la solidarité et à la création poétique. |

| Summary, etc. | Richard Rorty: Science as Representation and as SolidarityContrary to the great figures of classical pragmatism (Peirce, James, Dewey, Mead), Richard Rorty has often been accused of advocating an irrationalistic thinking, averse to science. In this article, I intend to qualify such a verdict by presenting the issues, inseparably philosophical and metaphilosophical, of the debate that Rorty has started with the main branches of contemporary philosophy of science, about topics such as essentialism (science as a “natural kind”), scientific realism and instrumentalism. I also intend to assess the way in which Rorty has redescribed scientific activity as aimed at solidarity and poetic creation. |
