| Summary, etc. | Dans les fragments éthiques, Démocrite présente la vieillesse comme un âge où la modération se manifeste plus facilement que dans la jeunesse (68B294 DK). Le fait qu’il décrive aussi la vieillesse comme une « mutilation intégrale (πήρωσις ὁλόκληρος) » (68B296 DK) laisse croire que sa théorie atomiste a pu servir à rendre compte du phénomène. Comprise comme une perte d’atomes dans toutes les parties du corps, la πήρωσις entraîne avec elle des fuites d’atomes psychiques qui peuvent avoir un effet sur le tempérament des vieillards. Si cette hypothèse est juste, elle s’ajoute au nombre des liens possibles entre la théorie atomiste et les pensées morales de Démocrite. |

| Summary, etc. | In the ethical fragments, Democritus presents old age as an age in which moderation manifests itself more easily than in youth (68B294 DK). The fact that he also describes old age as “a general mutilation (πήρωσις ὁλόκληρος)” (68B296 DK) suggests that his atomic theory may have been used to account for the phenomenon. Understood as a loss of atoms in all parts of the body, the πήρωσις in turn causes leaks of psychic atoms which can have an effect on the temperament of old people. If this hypothesis is correct, it adds to the number of possible links between the atomic theory and Democritus’s moral thinking. |
