| Summary, etc. | En 1743-1744, Jean-Jacques Rousseau servit comme secrétaire de l’ambassadeur de France à Venise. Le récit qu’il donne de ce séjour dans les Confessions mentionne les « célèbres amusements de cette ville », mais ces descriptions ne doivent pas cacher l’essentiel : « on était en guerre ». De son bureau de la Sérénissime République, Rousseau perçoit les échos des batailles et des négociations de la Guerre de Succession d’Autriche. Touchant aux questions des formes de gouvernement et des relations internationales, les Dépêches de Venise peuvent se lire comme une initiation à l’art politique. |

| Summary, etc. | From 1743 to 1744, Jean-Jacques Rousseau served as the secretary to the French ambassador to Venice. What the Confessions recall from his stay there include notably “the celebrated amusements of that city”, but those anecdotes should not obliterate the fact that “it was in time of war”. From his office in the Most Serene Republic, Rousseau could hear the echoes of the battles and negociations of the War of the Austrian Succession. Dealing with the issues of the forms of government and international relations, the Venetian diplomatic correspondence can be read as an initiation to the art of politics. |
