| Summary, etc. | Le principe de causalité empêche-t-il de penser la responsabilité ? Rend-il vain la distinction entre les agents responsables et ceux qui bénéficient d’excuses ? Parce que les arguments anti-déterministes posent plus de problèmes qu’ils n’en résolvent, nous soutiendrons que l’effort pour penser à la fois le déterminisme et le libre arbitre est notre meilleure option pour justifier la responsabilité légale comme morale. Nous verrons que les explications mécanistes ne menacent pas nécessairement les pratiques qui nous conduisent à considérer autrui comme responsable de ses actes. En dernier lieu, l’irréductibilité à la fois des termes moraux à des descriptions, et des jugements pratiques aux jugements théoriques, permettra de montrer qu’aucune connaissance déterministe ne peut se substituer à nos délibérations, et qu’il est donc rationnel de se considérer soi-même comme un agent moralement responsable. |

| Summary, etc. | Does the causality principle prevent us from considering liability? Does it make pointless the distinction between responsible agents and those who benefit from excuses? Since anti-determinist arguments generate more problems than they actually solve, we will argue that the effort to consider both determinism and free will is our best option to take into account legal as well as moral responsibility. We will show that mechanistic explanations do not necessarily threaten the practices leading us to consider others as responsible of their own acts. Finally, the impossibility to reduce moral terms to descriptions, or practical judgments to theoretical judgments, will prove that no deterministic knowledge could replace our deliberations, and that it is therefore rational to consider oneself as a morally responsible agent. |
