Sorti à l’époque sous un pseudonyme en raison de lois anglaises sur la diffamation protégeant peu les auteurs, cet ouvrage décrit sur un mode autobiographique l’immersion d’une intellectuelle blanche dans l’univers d’une usine automobile des années 1970, marqué par un encadrement autoritaire, une concentration de femmes immigrées, le travail à la chaîne et des conflits sociaux. Cet article propose de revisiter les conditions de cet engagement politique devenu enquête sociologique, en l’inscrivant dans le contexte de la seconde vague du féminisme anglais et ses relations avec le monde ouvrier. |

Initially published under a pseudonym because the laws of England did little to protect authors against libel claims, the book describe in an autobiographical mode the immersion of a white intellectual in the universe of the automobile industry in the 1970s, characterized by authoritarian supervision, a high concentration of immigrant women, assembly lines and social conflicts. This paper explores the background of this political-activism-turned-sociological-survey by resituating it in the context of the second wave of British feminism and of its relation with working class culture. |

Aparecido en la época bajo un seudónimo en razón de leyes inglesas sobre la difamación protegiendo poco a los autores, esta obra describe de manera autobiográfica la inmersión de una intelectual blanca en el universo de una fabrica de automóviles de los años 70, caracterizada por un marco autoritario, una concentración de mujeres inmigrantes, el trabajo automatizado y los conflictos sociales. Este articulo propone una relectura de las condiciones de compromiso político transformado en investigación sociológica, inscribiéndolo dentro del contexto de la segunda ola del feminismo ingles y sus relaciones con el mundo obrero. |

Auf Grund der englischen Anti-Diffamierungsgesetze, die Autoren kaum schützen, erschien die Erstausgabe unter Pseudonym. Das Werk beschreibt im Stil einer Autobiographie, wie eine weiße Intellektuelle in die Welt einer Automobilfabrik der 1970er Jahre eintaucht, die geprägt ist von autoritären Strukturen, einem hohen Anteil von Migrantinnen, Fließbandarbeit und sozialen Konflikten. Der Aufsatz geht dem Entstehungszusammenhang dieses politischen Engagements nach, das in einer soziologischen Studie mündete, und ordnet diese in den Kontext der zweiten Welle des englischen Feminismus und ihres Bezugs zur Arbeiterbewegung ein. |
