| Summary, etc. | Résumé Durant les périodes de guerre endémique, l’état de santé des populations tend progressivement à se dégrader. L’article traite un aspect précis de l’état de santé, à savoir le développement des maladies de type chronique et leur lien avec l’état de guerre. L’analyse porte sur la ville de Beyrouth qui a connu une décennie et demie de violences entre 1975 et 1990. Une augmentation des différentes maladies chroniques durant la seconde moitié de la guerre (1983-1992) est constatée dans toutes les générations, et des correspondances se dessinent entre cette évolution et les événements de la guerre. Les discours des personnes rencontrées sur le terrain décrivent la maladie comme une réponse à la situation de violences et de crise sociale et économique. Une réflexion sur la maladie dans la guerre est ici engagée avec pour axes directeurs le vécu dans la guerre et ses effets sur l’individu, et la signification de la maladie chronique dans ce contexte particulier. |

| Summary, etc. | During periods of endemic war, a nation’s health tends to deteriorate gradually. This article discusses a specific aspect of public health: the development of chronic illnesses and their link with the state of war, based on a study of war-torn Beirut between 1975 and 1990. During the second half of the war (1983-1992), there was a marked increase in the instance of various chronic illnesses in all age groups and this can be linked to events during the war. Reports from people working in the field describe illness as a response to violence and to social and economic crisis. Illness in war can be examined using various approaches, including an analysis of daily life in a war-torn environment, the impact of war on the individual, and the significance of chronic illness in extreme circumstances. |
