| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe patrimoine urbain de Singapour s’est moins constitué à partir d’un contenu concret à découvrir que comme une pure invention, certes en rapport avec une histoire et une certaine mémoire, mais surtout créé à des fins relatives à la citoyenneté, l’identité nationale et l’image internationale de la cité-État. Plutôt que d’évoquer en détail les caractéristiques d’un inventaire (travail déjà fort bien réalisé par les autorités locales), on s’attache davantage ici à la manière dont ont surgi les modalités de classement et de mise en valeur des bâtiments ou des quartiers sauvegardés ; étant entendu que ce que l’on recense et ce que l’on ignore, ce que l’on conserve et ce que l’on détruit, est extrêmement révélateur d’une politique patrimoniale, et plus largement d’une conception de l’urbanisme, qui outre Singapour, inspire désormais plusieurs mégapoles d’Asie du Sud-Est. |

| Summary, etc. | The invention of urban heritage in SingaporeThe urban heritage of Singapore has been put together not so much as a set of real features to discover, but as a pure invention. This conception certainly bears a relation to a particular history and a certain memory, but was created for purposes bound to citizenship, national identity and the city-state’s international image. Rather than present in detail the characteristics of an inventory (a task which has already been remarkably well accomplished by the local authorities on the subject) this paper examines the ways in which the buildings and the conserved districts have been classified and treated to show them in their best aspect. What is recorded and what is ignored, what is preserved and what is destroyed, reveals a great deal about a heritage policy and, more widely, much about an approach to urban planning which, beyond Singapore, is now inspiring authorities of several megalopolises in South-East Asia. |
