| Summary, etc. | Résumé Au Guatemala, une politique de conservation de la forêt tropicale du Petén succède à quatre décennies de colonisation agraire. Les préoccupations actuelles de stabilisation du front pionnier posent le problème du choix des instruments de régulation et des modalités de leur mise en œuvre. Les auteurs étudient l’incidence d’une intervention gouver-nementale sur la formalisation des normes d’appropriation et d’usage des ressources naturelles renouvelables. À cette fin, ils analysent la dynamique d’installation de nouvelles communautés dans la zone tampon de la Réserve de Biosphère Maya, où un programme de légalisation foncière et de conseil en agroforesterie est mis en œuvre. À partir de la chronologie des itinéraires fonciers et agraires de deux communautés, ils illustrent la diversité des traductions locales d’une intervention standardisée. Cette diversité a ensuite pu être associée au processus de différenciation sociale inhérent à la dynamique pionnière ainsi qu’à la variabilité des formes d’organisation collective. Si des changements dus à l’intervention ont effectivement lieu, ils ne transforment pas fondamentalement les projets de production des migrants, mais permettent d’améliorer les conditions de réalisation de certains de leurs projets. |

| Summary, etc. | Policy of land-tenure stabilization and biodiversity conservation: the case of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, Petén (Guatemala) In Guatemala, four decades of colonization for agriculture is giving way to a policy of conservation of the tropical forest of Petén. The current concerns for stabilizing the pioneer front raise the problem of deciding on the best regulatory instruments and on the means to be deployed for implementing them. The authors investigated the effect of government intervention on the formalization of the standards for appropriating and using renewable natural resources. To this end, they analysed the dynamics of the installation of new communities in the buffer zone of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, where a programme of land-tenure legislation and advice on agro-forestry is being set in place. On the basis of the chronology of the land-tenure and agrarian itineraries of two communities, they highlight the varied nature of local interpretations of a standardized intervention. This diversity could then be linked to social differentiation processes inherent in the dynamics of pioneer communities and to the variability of forms of collective organization. If changes are effectively taken place owing to government intervention, they do not fundamentally alter the migrants’ schemes of production. They lead rather to improvements in the ways some of their projects are accomplished. |
