| Summary, etc. | L’objectif de cette contribution est double. D’une part inscrire l’ouvrage d’Hélène Antoniadis-Bibicou Recherches sur les douanes à Byzance. L’ octava, le kommerkion et les commerciaires dans le cadre de la recherche historique de son époque ; d’autre part, rediscuter certains points concernant l’essentiel de cet ouvrage. Le livre, paru en 1963, est l’ouvrage le plus connu de la production d’H. Antoniadis dans le domaine des études byzantines. Formée dans l’esprit de l’école des Annales, Hélène Antoniadis considérait le commerce maritime comme un aspect de l’histoire maritime. Elle se proposa d’en étudier le volet fiscal au cours d’une période de dix siècles. Son travail s’inscrivait dans le cadre des recherches contemporaines de pointe sur l’histoire maritime, le commerce et le régime douanier en Méditerranée. Elle a attiré l’attention sur des sources inexploitées jusqu’alors (les archives et surtout les sceaux). La publication depuis la parution de l’ouvrage de nouveau matériel sigillographique a certainement diversifié le témoignage, mais elle n’a pas rendu caduque l’idée d’H. Antoniadis que les commerciaires étaient responsables de la perception de la taxe appelée kommerkion. On peut débattre longuement de la nature du kommerkion, ainsi que du mécanisme de sa perception. Il est également vrai qu’H. Antoniadis, en essayant d’approfondir la question dans la longue durée et de rester fidèle aux principes des Annales, a une tendance parfois risquée à la généralisation. Toutefois, malgré la critique que l’on peut adresser à tel ou tel aspect, l’ouvrage d’H. Antoniadis reste essentiel pour les études byzantines. Certains des acquis des byzantinistes de nos jours sur la taxation du commerce sont dus à son travail pionnier. |

| Summary, etc. | This contribution has a double aim. First, to set Hélène Antoniadis-Bibicou’book entitled Recherches sur les douanes à Byzance. The book was published in 1963 and is probably the most significant contribution of Hélène Antoniadis to Byzantine Studies.
