| Summary, etc. | L’article analyse le rôle que la microfinance peut jouer dans l’enrayement du travail des enfants. Au travers d’une revue de littérature théorique et empirique nous dégageons les principaux déterminants du travail des enfants. Il ressort que le travail des enfants résulte avant tout de la pauvreté et de la vulnérabilité des ménages. L’approfondissement du concept de vulnérabilité permet de comprendre comment le travail des enfants peut constituer un outil dans la stratégie de gestion des risques par le ménage. On s’interroge alors sur la potentialité du microcrédit à se substituer efficacement au travail des enfants, en tant qu’amortisseur des tensions conjoncturelles. L’utilisation du microcrédit peut être efficace dans ce cadre, en permettant au ménage de lisser sa consommation. Néanmoins, il faut rester prudent dans l’utilisation de cet outil et notamment être conscient du fait qu’il n’est efficace que dans un cadre bien particulier et pour lutter contre un certain type de travail des enfants. |

| Summary, etc. | The limitations of microcredit in the fight against poverty : the example of child labour The article examines the role that microfinance can play in stamping out child labour. A review of theoretical and empirical literature brought out the main determining factors behind child labour. It emerges that child labour results mainly from household poverty and vulnerability. Further development of the concept of vulnerability gives clues for understanding how child labour can represent a means in the family’s strategy for dealing with the risks it faces. The question is then raised as to microcredit’s potential for effectively substituting for the work the family’s children do, as a means of softening the stresses of the difficult economic situation. The use of microcredit can be effective in this context, by enabling a household to smooth its consumption. Nevertheless, prudence is still required in using this tool and, notably, awareness is needed of the fact that it is only effective in a highly particular context and for combating a certain type of child labour. |
