520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Heritage for the future against urban development: the example of Port-SaïdIn Egyptian towns and cities where urban growth is reaching limiting thresholds and where rapid change and densification of urban structural patterns are commonplace, is heritage conservation conceivable without an interventionist policy involving improvement and conservation of the various city districts? Elaboration of such a policy inevitably requires good knowledge of the history of the city and the way it was planned and developed, plus an appreciation of the quality of its architecture and urban features. The example of the effects of urban development at Port-Saïd, the first modern city built in Egypt, shows how a strongly-determined planning development policy and a strategic plan can jeopardize the heritage potential of the local areas, if it does not take into consideration the major issues surrounding city development history much earlier in the process.
