| Summary, etc. | Le silence de Hobbes à l’endroit de Bacon est particulièrement étonnant, mais il fait écho au silence tout aussi énigmatique de Bacon à l’endroit de la science civile. Il se joue là tout autre chose qu’un désintérêt ou une occultation insignifiante. La thèse que nous défendons est que ces deux silences sont liés et qu’ils sont motivés par la manière respective dont les deux auteurs rapportent la philosophie à la politique. L’un comme l’autre, mais de deux manières différentes, découvrent l’impossibilité de neutraliser et de normaliser la philosophie politique. Ils révèlent ce faisant l’incroyable tension qui soude et oppose en même temps la philosophie et la politique. |

| Summary, etc. | Hobbes’s silence about Bacon is assuredly strange, but it “echoes” the no less astonishing silence of Bacon himself about civil science. What is at stake, here, goes far beyond a mere disinterest for Bacon or for political science. Our claim, in this paper, is that these two silences are linked and grounded in the different ways Bacon and Hobbes construe how philosophy relates to politics. Both of them, although from divergent perspectives, face the impossibility to neutralise and normalise political philosophy. Thereby, they shed light on the extraordinary tension which unites and opposes at the same time philosophy and politics. |
