| Summary, etc. | RésuméEn ce début de millénaire, avec une croissance démographique de 1,9 % par an empiétant sur le rural (environ 250 000 ha urbanisés en vingt ans) et à peine 3,5 % de son territoire cultivable, l’Égypte fait face à d’importants défis. Les zones arides (8 % du pays), bien que menacées par les changements climatiques actuels, présentent un réel potentiel agricole. Le projet de recherche ELVULMED propose une analyse des processus d’adaptation des sociétés bédouines de la Côte Nord-Ouest suite à quinze ans de sécheresse, de 1995 à 2011. Les premiers résultats montrent des changements sociétaux profonds et de nouvelles formes d’adaptation liées à l’urbanisation croissante de la côte, formes dépassant le système traditionnel bédouin basé sur l’élevage. |

| Summary, etc. | Adaptation to global change of Bedouin societies in the North West Coastal Zone, EgyptIn this new millennium, with an annual population growth of 1.9% encroaching on rural land (around 250.000 ha urbanized in twenty years) and less than 3.5% agricultural land, Egypt faces important challenges. Although affected by climatic change, the arid zones (8% of the country) constitute potential areas for cultivation. The research project ELVULMED provides an analysis of how Bedouin communities in the North West Coastal Zone of Egypt have adapted to fifteen years of drought, from 1995 to 2010. The first results show major societal changes and that Bedouin communities have developed ways of adjusting, linked to coastal urbanization, that go beyond the traditional Bedouin system based on breeding. |
