Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The Underworld in the popular imagination is thought of here on the basis of three mythical schemes : the Homeric Nekya, the legend of Perseus and Apuleius’tale of Cupid and Psyche. In the various Balkan countries, the katabasis sequence, i.e. the descent of the hero into the underworld, is found in folktales, followed by his ascent to earth. This epic sequence is essential for the initiation of the mythical hero. The similarity of the images that describe the underworld leads us to believe that there is a common perception of the “afterlife” in the Balkans, independently of religious beliefs. This is evidenced by the common mythical substratum taken as an example from the Greek, Judeo-Spanish and Turkish corpus, representing the three monotheisms: Christian, Judaic or Muslim. The significant similarities in their representations of the underworld refer more to the ancient myths mentioned than to religious characteristics. We encounter mythical patterns that reflect the heritage of a common living environment in the Balkan regions. There is thus a phantasmatic of the afterlife, a set of representations that form a pool of resources from which the narrators of the various communities drew their stories. |
