| Summary, etc. | Cet article se penche sur la pensée de l’art à l’œuvre chez Balzac à partir d’un syntagme qu’on trouve à quelques reprises chez le romancier vers les années 1840, et qui synthétise l’entreprise de La Comédie humaine : « peindre la société moderne en action ». Moins tributaire de l’idée antique et classique de l’ ut pictura poesis, qui fait de la peinture, en tant que duplication visible de la nature, le modèle de l’art, la peinture de la société moderne balzacienne se comprend plutôt autour de la notion de tableau. Entre copie et invention, le tableau balzacien se donne à lire comme catégorie épistémologique et esthétique fondamentale de la poétique du romancier. Elle donne finalement à saisir une manière singulière, à rebours des lectures qui ne reconnaissent dans Balzac qu’une synthèse totale et générale de la société moderne. |

| Summary, etc. | This article examines Balzac’s thinking on art, starting with a phrase found in several of the novelist’s works from the 1840s, which synthesize the enterprise that is La Comédie humaine: “peindre la société moderne en action”. Less dependent on the ancient and classical idea of ut pictura poesis, which makes painting, as a visible duplication of nature, the model of art, the representation of Balzac’s modern society is better understood in terms of the notion of the “tableau”. Poised between copy and invention, the Balzacian “tableau” can be read as a fundamental epistemological and aesthetic category of the novelist’s poetics. This article thus offers a unique form of poetics, quite different from those readings that only recognize in Balzac a total and general synthesis of modern society. |
