| Summary, etc. | Portes et fenêtres figurent par centaines dans La Comédie humaine. C’est, bien sûr, en tant qu’observateur des réalités de son époque que Balzac s’est intéressé à ces éléments de l’environnement quotidien de ses personnages. Mais il en a fait surtout usage en tant que romancier. Portes et fenêtres par les scènes qui leur sont inhérentes, relevant d’une esthétique picturale, théâtrale voire cinématographique avant l’heure, scandent l’intrigue à moins qu’elles ne soient directement à l’origine du drame. Elles ne sont donc jamais évoquées gratuitement et par elles nous avons accès à ce qui aurait pu nous être dérobé : le huis clos de la vie privée. |

| Summary, etc. | There are hundreds of doors and windows in La Comédie humnaine. It is of course as an observer of the realities of his time that Balzac was interested in these aspects of the everyday environment of his characters. But he exploits them particularly as a novelist. Because of the scenes to which they belong, and redolent of a painterly, theatrical, or even prematurely cinematographic aesthetic, doors and windows punctuate the plot, unless, that is, they are the actual source of the drama. Their description is never gratuitous and it is through them that we can have access to what could have been hidden from us: the “huis clos” of our private lives. |
