| Summary, etc. | This article examines the convergent or divergent ways in which two “Marxist” or “post-Marxist” philosophers, Pierre Macherey and Jacques Rancière, have read Balzac, from A Theory of Literary Production (Macherey, 1966) to The Edges of Fiction (Rancière, 2017). It seeks both to situate these “philosophical” readings in relation to the perspectives of Marx or Georg Lukács, and to identify the features of the Balzacian text that they represent. After foregrounding the conflicts of logics and writing regimes that, in the eyes of our philosophers, produce the Balzacian novel, our article then focuses on the nature of the formal revolution they think the novel illustrates. Finally, a comparative, more global assessment allows us to characterize the readings of Macherey and Rancière, and the way in which they redefine the Balzacian text – how it functions and how it achieves its material, cognitive and political effects. |

| Summary, etc. | Cet article examine la manière (convergente ou divergente) dont deux philosophes « marxistes » ou « post-marxistes », Pierre Macherey et Jacques Rancière, ont lu Balzac, depuis « Pour une théorie de la production littéraire (Macherey, 1966) jusqu’aux Bords de la fiction(Rancière, 2017). Il s’efforce à la fois de situer ces lectures « philosophiques » par rapport à la perspective de Marx ou de Georg Lukács, et de dégager les traits du texte balzacien qu’elles dessinent. Après avoir exposé les conflits de logiques et de régimes d’écriture qui, aux yeux de nos philosophes, produisent le roman balzacien, notre texte s’intéresse à la nature de la révolution formelle dont il témoigne selon eux. Un bilan comparé et plus global permet enfin de définir les gestes de lecture de Macherey et de Rancière et la manière dont ils requalifient le texte balzacien, son fonctionnement et ses effets, sensibles, cognitifs et politiques. |
