| Summary, etc. | Quid du corps du roi hellénistique ? Lorsqu'on parle des rois dans l'Antiquité, on se trouve nécessairement en dessous du schème mis au jour par Ernst Kantorowicz, étudiant le corps avant les deux corps du roi. L'analyse de la Cyropédie de Xénophon permet de retrouver cette configuration, où le problème n'est pas celui de la conformation, toujours inadéquate, à un sur-corps royal, mais plutôt celui de l'embranchement, toujours opaque, du naturel et de la pompe, celle-ci étant le complément nécessaire de celui-là dans les conditions d'un empire étendu, celui-là risquant de disparaître sous le luxe dont s'entoure le souverain. Entre transparence et obstacle, signe et masque donc, ce modèle se trouve raffiné par Alexandre le Grand. S'il est pris dans la même alternative, le Conquérant est sous le feu de critiques qui l'obligent à séparer tactiquement sa personne et le luxe. Cette séparation n'a rien d'une dualité et ne fait que s'appuyer sur des frontières mouvantes, en insistant tantôt sur le corps naturellement royal d'Alexandre, tantôt au contraire sur le luxe reconfiguré par l'extrême maîtrise du souverain. Les rois hellénistiques, qui héritent de ce lot de problèmes, alternent entre une symbolisation de leur naturel et une naturalisation du symbolique, dans un jeu qui jamais ne cesse ni ne se stabilise, avant que l'arrivée de Rome ne vienne détruire ce corps royal en construction permanente. Tout se passe donc comme si l'incarnation de la royauté avait été proprement inconcevable. |

| Summary, etc. | What kind of body was the body of a Hellenistic king? To consider kings in antiquity is to necessarily reach back beyond Ernst Kantorowicz's schema and to explore the body before the concept of the “king's two bodies.” An analysis of Xenophon's Cyropaedia sheds light on this configuration, in which the problem was not so much the (unachievable) conformation of a royal über-body as the obscure point at which the natural encountered the ceremonious, the latter absolutely essential to the former in the context of a sprawling empire, but nevertheless threatening to engulf it in the luxury with which the sovereign surrounded himself. Neither transparent nor opaque, somewhere between a sign and a mask, this model was further honed by Alexander the Great. While his persona was bound up with the same alternative, the criticisms that he faced obliged Alexander to make a tactical distinction between his person and ceremonial luxury. This separation in no way implied a duality but rather depended on shifting boundaries, sometimes insisting on his naturally royal body, sometimes on the luxury reconfigured by the sovereign's extreme mastery. The Hellenistic kings inherited these questions, and alternated between a symbolization of their natural being and a naturalization of the symbolic in a constant interplay that resisted stabilization. Only the rise of Rome would bring an end to this royal body in perpetual construction, as though the incarnation of royalty itself was inconceivable. |
