| Summary, etc. | L’ornement n’existe pas en soi, il est ontologiquement dépendant d’une réalité (artistique ou non) antérieure à lui – mais de nombreux ornements sont détachables de leur support. La secondarité de l’ornement explique sa propension à pulluler. L’ornement entretient ainsi avec l’œuvre ornée un rapport ambigu : il tend à l’affaiblir (par sa prolifération) non moins qu’à la construire (par le liant ou l’éclat qu’il lui donne). En musique et dans l’art oratoire notamment, l’ornement est essentiel. Dans tous les cas, l’ornement vise à présenter l’œuvre ; dans certains cas même, l’ornement vaut pour lui-même, comme pure jubilation de la vie et « manifestation de soi » sans destinataire. |

| Summary, etc. | Ornament does not exist in itself, it depends ontologically on a reality (artistic or not) that is prior to it – but many ornaments can be detached from their medium. The secondarity of the ornament explains its propensity to proliferate. The ornament has thus an ambiguous relationship with the ornamented work: it tends to weaken it (through its proliferation) no less than to build it (through the binder or the shine it gives it). In music and in oratory art especially, ornamentation is essential. In all cases, the ornament aims to present the work; in some cases, the ornament even stands for itself, as pure jubilation of life and “self-expression” without any recipient. |
