Summary, etc. George Catlin est un artiste peintre américain. Dans les années 1830, il prend la décision d’aller peindre les populations amérindiennes sur leurs lieux de vie afin de sauvegarder une trace de leurs cultures. Cet article présente les résultats de l’analyse des tableaux de George Catlin. Cette analyse est axée sur la façon dont sont représentées et mises en scènes les tribus amérindiennes dans les toiles et lors des expositions, et sur l’ indianité ainsi transmise par l’artiste à ses contemporains.

Summary, etc. George Catlin is an American painter. In the 1830’s, he decided to portray the American Indian tribes in their lands. His announced ambition was to saveguard their culture. The object of this article is to present the way George Catlin represented the populations he had lived with during his travels, and to look into the indianness created by the painter, through his paintings, but also through the organization of his exhibitions.
