520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In Gypsies’weddings, songs, dances, ways of dressing and of standing combine in a particular artistic expression. The singular cadence and lyrics of Alborea, the nuptial song par excellence, reveal a seemingly secular identity while, in reality, all these practices are borrowed from non-Gypsy local traditions. It’s the case with two Gypsy religious celebrations depicting the marriage between Christ and Virgin Mary, and that so « gypsies » rituals actually rooted in non-Gypsy local traditions. They thus create and reify bonds inside their community while reaffirming their place and specificity within Spanish society. Whether real or symbolic, the boundary expressed during wedding rites is essentially built through the other’s eyes, the one who ignores the deep internal issues of such practices : the Gypsies cultural intimacy, that which ultimately individualizes them.
