| Summary, etc. | Savant interdisciplinaire, l’anthropologue Alain Testart a toujours cherché des lois sociologiques générales, par exemple en soulignant dans les prestations matrimoniales les relations entre prix de la fiancée et esclavage pour dette, reliant institutions et concepts. Il a revisité les champs classiques de la discipline sur la notion d’esclave en en proposant sans doute la meilleure définition actuelle, et sur celle du don. A. Testart s’est aussi intéressé à la question de la dette (culturelle, cultuelle, privée, matrimoniale) liée à la notion de sacrifice également analysée et centrale selon lui dans les sociétés hiérarchisées. Pour illustrer cette vision dynamique proposée par Testart des interactions entre institutions, structures, croyances et pratiques sociales considérées sur le temps long et de manière comparative, la présente contribution prend l’exemple de l’Asie du Sud-Est, part signifiante de l’Asie définie comme aire « sacrificielle » par Testart. En effet, l’Asie du Sud-Est est caractérisée notamment par l’importance de l’esclavage interne, de la stratification sociale et du prix de la fiancée dans la majorité des espaces sociaux concernés, larges ou restreints. |

| Summary, etc. | Always an interdisciplinary scholar, social anthropologist Alain Testart kept looking for general sociological laws. In marriage negotiations, for example, he stressed the link between bride wealth and debt slavery by connecting institutions and concepts. He revisited the classic fields of the discipline, particularly regarding the concept of slavery, to propose what undoubtedly is the best current definition, and the concept of gift. He also investigated the question of the debt (cultural, religious, private, connubial) in relation to sacrifice, a concept he viewed as central to hierarchic societies. The present chapter endeavours to clarify Testart’s dynamic views of the interactions between social institutions, structures, beliefs, and practices in a diachronic and comparative perspective. To achieve this goal, this paper focuses on Southeast Asia, a significant part of Asia, area that Testart defined as “sacrificial”. Southeast Asia is characterized in particular by the importance of internal slavery, social stratification, and bride wealth in the majority of the concerned broad or narrow social spaces. |
