| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | For Mongolian nomadic herders, the land they inhabit is the property of spirits of the place : when leaving the camp to nomadize, they have theoretically to return them a space free of any human traces. However, today, they produce non-biodegradable waste that leaves persistent traces when they leave. This gives rise to a reinterpretation of the local cosmology and of the status of waste, now presented as undesirable traces. This article therefore questions the existence of the status of waste as an undesirable trace to eliminate before to nomadize or be subject to the wrath of the spirits. Recounting the different representations of waste and their associated management models during the twentieth century in Mongolia, this article aims to show the divergences, the tensions and the reinterpretations rising from the question of the status of non-biodegradable waste and from its proper treatment in rural Mongolia. |
