| Summary, etc. | L’homme à la tête dévorée par des dragons, représenté sur un des chapiteaux de la Porte des Comtes de Saint-Sernin de Toulouse, et sur deux autres chapiteaux de cette même collégiale, également présent dans plusieurs églises romanes du sud de la France et du nord de l’Espagne dans le dernier tiers du xie siècle et le début du xiie siècle, a été produit et diffusé par des commanditaires acquis aux idées de la réforme grégorienne. Cette corrélation inédite est à l’origine d’une lecture ecclésiologique de la Porte des Comtes, organisée autour de deux scènes de dévoration emblématiques, cet homme à la tête attaquée par des dragons (l’« homme aux dragons »), et la femme aux seins mordus par des serpents (la « femme aux serpents »). Face à l’hostilité du clergé cathédral toulousain et des moines de Moissac, les chanoines réguliers de Saint-Sernin, soutenus par Grégoire VII, Urbain II et leurs légats, rappelèrent aux fidèles, à travers un programme iconographique d’une grande cohérence, les deux fléaux qui souillaient l’Église et qu’ils combattaient avec une très grande fermeté, à savoir la simonie et le nicolaïsme. |

| Summary, etc. | The man with head devoured by dragons, represented on one of the Porte des Comtes capitals of Saint-Sernin de Toulouse, and on two other capitals of this same collegiate church, also seen in several Romanesque churches in the south of France and in the north of Spain during the last third of the 11th century and at the beginning of the 12th century, was produced and disseminated by patrons committed to the Gregorian reform ideas. This unprecedented correlation offers an ecclesiological reading of the Porte des Comtes, organized around two emblematic scenes of devouring, this man whose head is attacked by dragons and the woman with breast bitten by snakes. Facing the hostility of the Toulouse cathedral clergy and the monks from Moissac, the regular canons of Saint-Sernin, supported by Gregory VII, Urban II, and their legates, reminded the faithful people, through a highly coherent iconographic program, of the two scourges that defiled the Church and that they were strongly fighting, namely simony and nicolaism. |
