520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Taking an underused narrative source, the Gesta Ambaziensium dominorum, this article aims to consider the development of the lords of Amboise’s domain from the middle of the eleventh to the middle of the twelfth century. The lineage of the lords of Amboise begins as a mere vassal of the count of Anjou. Gaining authority over the castles of Amboise, Chaumont-sur-Loire and Montrichard, it becomes one of the most powerful baronies in the Loire region. The lord of Amboise used every means in pursuit of power : hypergamic alliances with the count’s agreement, feudal wars deploying ambushes or duplicity, or even money. Studied one after the other, the taking of these different castles, often gradual, sometimes swift, by the lord of Amboise, emphasise the precarious balance on which feudal society rested between the eleventh and twelfth centuries. |
