Summary, etc. | The extension of the Templar presence in the south of France and the Iberian Peninsula is marked by the creation of the Templar province of Provence and Hispania. The first master of the province was Pierre de Rovira, who governed the province for sixteen years. In this period, he managed to create a powerful institution with significant economic and military power. During his tenure, the Order of the Temple became the defender of the new Christian frontier on the Ebro. Pierre encouraged the consolidation and creation of Templar commanderies, obtained important privileges from local rulers, and facilitated the training and promotion of the Templars who led the new commanderies. At his death, he was respected and venerated by the brethren of the Order. Before him, two other Templars established the basis of the organization in the future province. They are Hugues Rigaud and Arnaud de Bedoç. The first supported the creation of the important commandery of Douzens and began the presence of the Temple in the Catalan counties. Arnaud de Bedoç directed the beginnings and the consolidation of the Templar presence in Vallès and in Provence, in Richerenches and Roaix. Along with them, many other knights joined the call of the Temple. Among them, Béranger de Rovira, brother of the first master, and Béranger Raymond played a leading role. |

Summary, etc. |
