| Summary, etc. | RésuméDe nombreuses situations de vie et de travail aussi inacceptables que répandues de par le monde, nous sont présentées de temps à autre par les médias qui, ne pouvant en restituer la complexité, opèrent trop souvent par simplification excessive. Cet article cherche à dépasser une telle image simplifiée des conditions de vie et de travail des ouvrières des usines de sous-traitance (au Nicaragua), sans pour autant évacuer de l’analyse les conditions inacceptables qui sont le propre de leur travail. Au-delà des discours convenus sur les conséquences de la mondialisation et d’une vision des ouvrières réduites à un statut de victimes, cet article s’ancre et s’appuie constamment sur l’extraordinaire richesse des histoires de vies que les ouvrières rencontrées ont partagée avec la chercheuse. Il s’agit alors d’interroger, dans cette perspective, le sens qu’acquiert pour elles le travail et de repenser la « centralité du travail » à partir d’elles-mêmes, et ce malgré l’omniprésence du puissant argument de la création d’emplois. |

| Summary, etc. | The subcontracted life of the maquiladora workers in Nicaragua Many living and working situations that are as unacceptable as they are widespread are presented to us from time to time by the media which, as they cannot express their complexity, too often operate by excessive simplification. This article seeks to go beyond such a simplification of the living and working conditions of the workers of subcontracting factories (in Nicaragua), without losing sight of the un-acceptable conditions that are characteristic of their work. Going beyond the usual statements about the effects of globalization and a vision of women workers reduced to victim status, this article is rooted in and draws from the extraordinary richness of the stories of their lives that the women shared with the author. Within this perspective, she then examines the meaning that work has for them and rethinks the “centrality of work” from their standpoint, despite the omnipresent argument about “job creation”. |
