| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’Église catholique polonaise tire son prestige du rôle qu’elle a joué dans la résistance à l’occupation étrangère, au xixe siècle, puis sous le régime communiste. Or son influence s’est considérablement accrue grâce au Concordat signé avec l’État postcommuniste et grâce aux liens formels ou informels tissés avec les partis politiques. Comme l’illustre la loi sur l’interdiction totale de l’avortement adoptée en 1993, le catholicisme constitue de facto la religion d’État dans ce pays formellement laïque. Malgré le recul des principes religieux en matière de sexualité et de procréation, la plupart des politiciens évitent de critiquer l’Église sur ces sujets controversés. Aussi les féministes rencontrent-elles de sérieuses difficultés à défendre les droits des femmes — et l’adhésion à l’Union européenne n’a quasiment rien modifié dans ce domaine.* |

| Summary, etc. | The historical prestige of the Polish Catholic Church owes to its presence as a national symbol of resistance, both under foreign occupation and during the communist regime. In the post-communist era the power of the Church within the political arena has significantly increased, through the Concordat that was signed with the State as well as through formal and informal ties with political parties. Catholicism is the de facto religion of the State, even if Poland remains a nominally secular country. This was illustrated by the adoption, in 1993, of a total abortion ban. Although the relation of Poles to the Catholic dogma on sexuality and reproductive rights tends to be weak, fearing criticism from Church authorities, most politicians avoid controversial topics and express their commitment to Catholic dogma. Thus women’s groups have encountered serious difficulties in their efforts to defend women’s rights to sexual and reproductive autonomy. Although accession to the European Union has put Poland in an awkward position with respect to equality of rights between women and men, it has not fundamentally altered the real situation with respect to the controversial topic of abortion. |

| Summary, etc. | ResumenLa Iglesia católica polaca debe su prestigio al papel que jugó en la resistencia a la ocupación extranjera, en el siglo xix, y luego bajo el régimen comunista. Ahora bien su influencia se ha considerablemente incrementado gracias al Concordato firmado con el Estado poscomunista y a los vínculos formales o informales tejidos con los partidos políticos. Como lo ilustra la ley sobre la prohibición total del aborto adoptada en 1993, el catolicismo constituye de facto la religión de Estado en este país formalmente laíco. A pesar del retroceso de los principios religiosos en materia de sexualidad y de procreación, la mayor parte de la clase política evita criticar la Iglesia sobre esos temas controvertidos. Así las feministas encuentran serias dificultades para defender los derechos de las mujeres — y la adhesión a la Unión europea no ha modificado casi nada en este campo. |
