| Summary, etc. | Le plan d’études de 1902 modernise-t-il l’enseignement des lycées de garçons comme l’affirment les Républicains engagés dans sa mise en œuvre ? De fait, renforçant les sciences et les langues vivantes qui, à égalité avec les humanités classiques, constituent dès lors les piliers d’un enseignement sans latin, révisant les contenus enseignés et les méthodes éducatives pour y insuffler l’esprit « positif », marque de la République radicale et laïque, le plan est novateur et « moderne » au sens où il vise à adapter les études aux besoins de la démocratie et de la nation au seuil du XXe siècle. Il en résulte que les adversaires des réformateurs les accusent de dénaturer l’enseignement secondaire et, pour certains, instrumentalisent la réforme afin de discréditer le régime. La bataille de la rénovation ne dure pas moins de dix ans mais le ministère ne ploie pas et, même s’il ressort de l’examen des rapports d’inspection que la réforme n’a qu’un impact limité sur les situations effectives d’enseignement, parce que l’évolution des pratiques pédagogiques s’inscrit dans la longue durée, le nouveau dispositif des études sonne la fin du lycée napoléonien . |

| Summary, etc. | Does the 1902 curriculum program modernise teaching in boys’ high schools, as the Republicans committed to its implementation argue? It is a fact that, inasmuch as the program reinforces the teaching of the sciences and of modern languages which, on a par with the classics, constitute from then on the basis of an education without Latin, and inasmuch as it revises the contents and the methods used in order to diffuse the “positive” spirit, characteristic of the radical and laic Republic, the program is both innovative and modern in the sense that it tries to adapt the course of studies to the needs of the democracy and nation at the beginning of the 20th century. The result is that the reformers’ adversaries accused them of distorting secondary education, some of them making use of the reform’s critique to discredit the regime. The battle around renovation lasted no less than ten years but the ministry of Education did not give in and, even if the analysis of inspectors’ reports shows that the reform had a limited impact on actual teaching because the evolution of pedagogical practice takes place in the long run, the reform signalled the end of the Napoleonian lycée. |
