| Summary, etc. | A trial of neighbours?Tutsi genocide defendants brought before their victims (Paris Assize Court, 2016-2018)Since 2014, Rwandan nationals have been tried in France for their participation in the 1994 Tutsi genocide. This was the case for Octavien Ngenzi and Tito Barahira, who were tried jointly in Paris in 2016 (first instance) and 2018 (on appeal). Their former neighbours were called to testify at their trials. Two decades after the genocide, a trial in France became a setting for “reunions” and confrontation between the accused and the victims as civil parties. Based on an ethnography of these trials and a study of their audiovisual archives, this article considers what resulted from this proximity at the heart of the hearing, in an unprecedented face-to-face encounter made possible by criminal procedure. |

Ce fut le cas d'Octavien Ngenzi et de Tito Barahira, jugés conjointement en 2016 (première instance) et en 2018 (appel) à Paris. À l'occasion de leurs procès, leurs anciens voisins ont été appelés à témoigner. Deux décennies après le génocide, un procès en France est devenu un lieu de « retrouvailles » et de confrontation entre accusés et victimes constituées parties civiles. À partir de l'ethnographie de ces procès et de l'étude de leurs archives audiovisuelles, cet article interroge ce qu'il est advenu de cette proximité au cœur de l'audience, dans un face-à-face inédit rendu possible par la procédure pénale. |
