| Summary, etc. | En soixante ans, le plus grand transporteur sénégalais, Ndiaga Ndiaye, décédé en 2020, a connu une trajectoire exceptionnelle qui l’a amené de son milieu rural au transport urbain de Dakar et du métier de chauffeur de taxi au statut de multi-exploitant de minibus. À la tête d’une entreprise sans structure de gestion, il a valorisé comme ressources de fonctionnement le chauffeur et l’apprenti, ainsi que des véhicules maintes fois réparés. Dominant le transport urbain, il a imposé sa marque de fabrique, avec son nom de famille éponyme d’un véhicule de ramassage. Au tournant des années 1980, le redéploiement de l’État à travers un processus de « décharge » et l’adoption de dispositifs de dérégulation et de déréglementation de l’économie sénégalaise ont fait émerger moult acteurs privés de transport, dont Ndiaga Ndiaye, et légitimé l’informalité à tous les niveaux de la décision. Son réseau d’allégeances politiques et religieuses a conforté sa position de pouvoir et fait de lui un acteur incontournable du transport sénégalais. C’est sur la base d’un long suivi qualitatif que sont présentées l’évolution géographique du parcours de Ndiaga Ndiaye, puis la part que ce dernier a occupée dans les changements intervenus dans le transport urbain dakarois. Opportuniste et réactif, il représente l’archétype du Sénégalais d’origine rurale inséré dans l’espace urbain de la capitale, qui, au même titre que les élites du pouvoir politique, économique ou culturel, a pris toute sa place dans la société contemporaine. |

| Summary, etc. | In sixty years, Ndiaga Ndiaye, who died in 2020, was Senegal’s greatest transport operator. His exceptional career took him from his rural background to urban transport in Dakar, and from a cab driver to a multi-operator of minibuses. At the head of a company with no management structure, he used as his operating resources his driver and his apprentice, as well as vehicles that had been repaired many times. Dominating urban transport, he imposed his trademark, with his family name eponymous with a pick-up vehicle. At the turn of the 1980s, the redeployment of the State through a process of discharge and the adoption of deregulation measures in the Senegalese economy led to the emergence of many private transport players, including Ndiaga Ndiaye, and legitimized informality at all levels of decision-making. His network of political and religious allegiances reinforced his position of power and made him a key player in Senegalese transport. Based on a lengthy qualitative study, this article presents the geographical evolution of Ndiaga Ndiaye’s career, and the part he played in the changes that took place in Dakar’s urban transport. Ndiaga Ndiaye was an opportunistic and reactive man who embodies the archetype of Senegalese people of rural origin, integrated into the urban space of the capital, who, like the political, economic and cultural power elites, found his place in contemporary society. |
