| Summary, etc. | Charles Chaumont a été un professeur marquant de droit international de la Faculté de Droit de Nancy de 1945 à 1984. Il a commencé ses recherches en droit international par une thèse portant sur l’analyse de la neutralité qui a été publiée en 1936. Il a repris l’analyse de cette question après l’adoption de la Charte des Nations Unies. Il s’est opposé à l’enseignement du droit international classique et a proposé une nouvelle méthode d’analyse de ce droit. Charles Chaumont a marqué les réflexions des internationalistes d’abord par la place qu’il accorde aux Etats et aux peuples et aussi par son approche originale de la notion de jus cogens. Il attache de l’importance à la souveraineté des Etats, à leur sécurité et au problème de l’agression tout comme il aborde longuement les droit des peuples à disposer d’eux-mêmes. Il est à l’origine d’une école critique du droit international qui applique de manière originale la méthode dialectique. |

| Summary, etc. | Charles Chaumont was a prominent teacher in the field of international law at the Law University of Nancy from 1945 to 1984. He started his research in international law with a thesis focused on the analysis of neutrality, published in 1936. He continued his analysis of the issue after the adoption of the Charter of the United Nations. He disagreed with the traditional teaching of international law and proposed a new method to analyse the law. Charles Chaumont left his mark on internationalists’ thinking, firstly by granting an importance to States and peoples and secondly through his original approach to the notion of jus cogens. He attached great importance to the sovereignty of States, to their security and problems of aggression, just as he broached in considerable detail the rights of peoples to self-determination. He was at the forefront of a critical school of international law which applies dialectical method in an original way. |
