| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | In his seminar on transference Lacan examines Plato’s Symposium, arguing that the psychoanalyst finds a historical antecedent in Socrates. Lacan shows how, in a stratagem worthy of an analyst, the Socrates of the Symposium turns Alcibiades’ declaration of love towards another (Agathon). In a certain sense, Socrates serves to “interpret” Alcibiades, insofar as he unveils to Alcibiades the object of Alcibiades’ unconscious desire. The interest of this perspective is that the transfer is not considered in the sense that it is an intersubjective or interpersonal relationship (which would, according to Lacan, reinforce the imaginary confrontation), but is rather considered in the sense of its symbolic determination Nonetheless, there is indeed an interpretation of the transfer – or rather, there is interpretation in the transfer. From this manœuvre, Lacan was able to invent the notion of “the analyst’s desire”, even though it remains to be seen what relations might possibly obtain between this notion and that of countertransference. |
