520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Ancient cynicism preaches a complete return to nature and rejects any prohibitions based on social conventions. For the Cynic, sexual pleasure is natural, instinctive and on the same level as the pleasures of animals. In sexual matters, these philosophers therefore accepted a number of socially shocking modes of behavior, such as public intercourse or masturbation, incest, free love, or the holding in common of women and children. In the background of all these attitudes, as expressed by Diogenes in his Republic, and transmitted, albeit in a partial and polemical way, by the Epicurean philosopher Philodemus of Gadara in the first century B.C., we can glimpse the basic values of Cynic ethics : above all, individual freedom and complete independence. Shocking their fellow citizens was not the main goal for Cynics : instead, they intended their provocative attitudes as pedagogical means for persuading people to drop their masks and forcing them to question established customs. |
