520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | In the North American fur trade, the coureur de bois, often referred to as a “White Indian” by historians, was a familiar although frequently criticized figure by colonial elites. By focusing on descriptions of his physical body, the article examines the acculturation process between Europeans and Indians. Through physical and, sometimes sexual contact with Native Americans, his body escaped many of the colonial society’s repressive normative structures. The shaving of his beard, tattooing sessions, rituals of shamanist healing, and forms of sexual intimacy with Indian women, all contributed to changing the coureur de bois’ physical body. These also contributed to the creation of new codes of virility. |
