| Summary, etc. | Cet article s’inscrit dans les domaines de la gestion publique, de la sociologie et du contrôle de gestion. Il vise à éclairer la fonction de contrôle de gestion dans les municipalités. Dans cette perspective, une analyse du rôle du contrôleur de gestion territorial et de ses outils, basée sur la littérature académique, est présentée. Ensuite, une étude empirique quantitative sur le contrôle de gestion dans les municipalités de plus de 20.000 habitants est présentée : elle identifie cinq types de contrôleur de gestion territorial, à savoir le stratège, le partenaire, le conseiller, l’analyste et l’hybride. Le rôle de chaque type de contrôleur de gestion territorial est ensuite précisé. Ce rôle, déjà défini par la variabilité de la taille de l’organisation, serait déterminé par ses outils de gestion, vecteurs d’action dans l’organisation. |

| Summary, etc. | This article falls within the fields of public management, sociology and management control. It aims to shed light on the management control function in the municipalities. In this perspective, an analysis of the role of the territorial management controller and his tools based on the academic literature, is presented. Then, a quantitative empirical study on management control in municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants is presented: it identifies five types of territorial management controller, namely the strategist, partner, advisor, analyst and hybrid. The role of each type of territorial management controller is then specified. This role, already defined by the variability of organizational size, would be determined by his management tools, vectors of action in the organization. |
