Summary, etc. | Avec son œuvre essentiellement composée de machines, Jean Tinguely est un artiste qui semble relever le défide Descartes, disant que le corps-machine est l’œuvre de Dieu. Les machines tinguéliennes évoquent inévitablement la description de Tausk de « l’appareil à influencer » de certains schizophrènes, sauf qu’au lieu d’obéir à une logique psychotique qui en fait des instances persécutrices redoutables, elles oscillent entre le ludique et le tragique, comme si l’artiste tentait, sur un mode qui s’apparente à la défense maniaque, de concilier la vie et la mort. Il s’agit de danser – les œuvres convoquent le rire, le sarcasme, la dérision, le canular – mais c’est aussi une Danse macabre où l’artiste qui, comme ses sculptures, ne cessait de bouger, brûlant la vie par les deux bouts, danse avec la mort. |

Summary, etc. | The machines of Tinguely - Dancing with death. Jean Tinguely, whose work is mainly made up of machines, is an artist who apparently takes up Descartes’ challenge, in his assertion that the body as machine is the work of God. Tinguely’s machines inevitably call to mind Tausk’s description of the ‘influencing machine’ of certain schizophrenics, except that instead of conforming to a psychotic logic with makes them a terrible tool of persecution, they over between the playfull and the tragic ; it is as if the artist were trying, in a style reminiscent of maniacal defense, to reconcile life and death. Dancing is the issue here – his works summon up laughter, sarcasm, derision, practical jokes – but it is also a danse macabre where the artist, like his sculptures, dances endlessly, burning the candle at both ends, dances with death. |
