520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Abstract: M. Sergius Silus, Catilina’s great-grandfather, was a valiant soldier, who distinguished himself against the Punic and the Gauls. He escaped captivity twice and received a large number of wounds. The most serious of these caused him to lose his right hand, which he replaced with an iron prosthesis ( dextra ferrea) in order to continue to participate successfully in Roman military operations. But during his urban praetorship in 197 BC, this artificial hand was the cause of an “affair” that pitted him against his fellow praetors and threatened him with not taking part in public sacrifices. Pliny the Elder ( Natural History, VII, 104-106) is the only one to mention this sacrificial incapacity of Sergius, from which the magistrate defended himself, without the outcome of the proceedings being known. In any case, this story reveals the importance given, in Roman culture, to right hands, seats of fides and symbols of legitimate power. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
