Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | The Image of the Adviser in Tacitus: an Art of Dissimulation and ManipulationThe advisers accompanying high-ranking personages or drawn into the sphere of influence of the emperors were many and varied. In the Histories and the Annals, Tacitus shows us the preeminent role they played in decision-making, especially at times of crisis. As the advisers were close to those personages, whose strengths and weaknesses they were familiar with, they were able to deploy the art of speech as well as a persuasive and manipulative strategy: this resulted in the exercise of a form of power not only on the emperor himself but also on the course of events. Yet, beyond the actions and psychological motives which guided the advisers, the historian uncovers at the same time the emperor’s own traits. |
